About

My Approach to Therapy

My approach to therapy is client-centered, which means that the counseling process is dictated by the needs of each client and the particular change he or she wants to make in their life. I believe that different people will be helped by different approaches depending on the various issues they are facing. Some of the clinical approaches I draw from include solution focused therapy, narrative therapy, and strength based strategies.

My approach as a counselor is informal and straightforward. I believe that the therapeutic relationship should be an engaged relationship. So as a therapist I am an active participant in the counseling process – I will question, suggest, sometimes challenge, and always explain what we are doing in the counseling process. Ultimately, my aim is to assist you in identifying your own goals and to support your personal growth however you define that.

Background

I have both a law degree and a Masters in Social Work from the University of Toronto. I have utilized these academic qualifications in more than a decade of work as a criminal lawyer, social service manager and counselor. Both before and since leaving the practice of law, I have worked extensively as a counselor with women, youth, and other individuals. I have also been the managing director of a health care clinic dealing with women’s reproductive health issues and a senior manager of counseling services at a Toronto social service agency.

I am a non-practicing member in good standing of the Law Society of Upper Canada and a registered social worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.

* Please note that as a non-practicing member of the Law Society of Upper Canada I am not permitted to provide any legal services, including legal advice or opinion. *
